UPVC doors are built to last, but they’re not maintenance free. Over time parts wear down, doors shift slightly on their hinges, and locking mechanisms take a lot of daily strain. What usually starts as “it’s a bit stiff” can quickly turn into “the door won’t lock at all.”

At Stay Safe Locksmiths, we carry out proper UPVC door repairs across Northumberland and North Tyneside. Whether it’s a failed mechanism, a door that’s dropped, or a lock that’s starting to stick, we focus on repairing the problem properly, not pushing you towards a full new door and frame that you don’t actually need.

Our main service areas are all in Northumberland or North Tyneside we cover those areas daily so we can attend emergencies quickly.

When a UPVC Door Starts Developing Issues

Most UPVC door problems don’t happen suddenly, they start small and gradually become worse over time.

You might notice:

• The handle needs lifting with more force
• The key doesn’t turn smoothly
• The door needs to be slammed to close
• It feels like something isn’t lining up

That’s usually the early stages of mechanism wear or alignment issues.

The worst thing you can do is continue to use excessive force. This is what causes the inside of multi point locks to disintegrate.

We regularly repair doors in areas such as Whitley BayCramlington and North Shields. In the majority of cases the fix is far simpler than customers expect.

UPVC Door Lock Repairs

Modern UPVC doors use a multi-point locking system. When you lift the handle, several locking points engage into locking keeps on the frame. If just one small part inside fails, the whole door and lock will stop working properly.

Common issues we deal with include:

• Handle lifts but key won’t turn
• Key turns but door won’t open
• Door unlocks but won’t open
• Lock completely jammed

Very often the fault lies in the centre gearbox rather than the whole locking strip. That means we can usually replace just the failed part instead of the entire mechanism.

If you’re in Killingworth or surrounding areas, this is one of the most common callouts we attend especially on doors that are somewhere between 8 and15 years old.

Dropped UPVC Doors & Alignment Problems

Doors drop over time. It’s very normal, especially on doors that are used heavily. When a door drops, the locking points no longer line up correctly with the keeps in the frame. That’s when people start having to lift the handle harder and harder to get it to lock.
Sometimes it’s a simple hinge adjustment. Other times the hinges are worn and might need replacing. The key thing is diagnosing it properly before the internal mechanism gets damaged from too much force.

We carry out these types of adjustments regularly in areas like Tynemouth and across North Tyneside.

Emergency UPVC Door Repairs

If your door won’t lock at all, that becomes an emergency security issue.

We can attend when:
• You’re locked out due to a failed mechanism
• The handle has gone floppy
• The key has snapped inside the lock
• The door can’t be secured

Our aim is always to repair first. Only if the mechanism is beyond repair would we look at replacing it.

Repair First, Replace Only If Needed

There’s a big difference between a locksmith and a door salesman.
Most UPVC door problems can be repaired. Full mechanism replacements are sometimes necessary, but not nearly as often as some companies suggest.

If something can be fixed safely and properly, we’ll fix it. If it can’t, we’ll explain why in plain English and show you the issue, so you can make the right decision.
