Understanding What Is Going Wrong With Your Lock

Locks are mechanical items, and like anything with moving parts, they wear out over time. On upvc doors, the issue is often not just the lock itself but the multi point mechanism inside the door, which relies on several components all working together. A fault in one part of the system can affect how the whole door operates. You might notice the handle becoming stiff, the key needing extra force, or the door needing to be lifted slightly to get the door to lock. These are usually early signs that something is out of alignment or starting to fail. Upvc door lock repairs are one of the most common jobs we carry out at Stay Safe Locksmiths.

Wooden doors usually have a different setup. Mostly using mortice locks or night latches rather than multi point systems. Common issues include locks refusing to open, keys spinning in the lock or locks jamming whilst trying to turn the key.

In areas like Whitley Bay and Tynemouth, coastal conditions can also play a part. Salt from the sea air and general exposure to the elements can speed up wear as internal parts corrode and wear much faster. This is something our North Shields Locksmith Service sees very often.

Lock Repairs Where Possible

Repairing a lock is always the first option we look at as this is usually the cheapest option for our customers. Many faults can be resolved without replacing the lock. Misaligned doors can be adjusted and worn components can sometimes be replaced.

On uPVC and composite doors, gearbox issues are one of the more common faults we see. These can often be replaced without the need to change the entire locking strip or other components such as euro cylinders or handles. Similarly, problems with a doors alignment can usually be corrected by adjusting hinges and keeps, which takes the pressure off the lock and allows it to function normally again.

When a Does a Lock Need to be Replaced?

This is a question we get asked a lot. There are situations where replacement is the only option. If a lock has failed internally, suffered damage from an attempted break in, or is simply too worn to function reliably again, fitting a new lock is the safest route.

If a lock replacement is necessary and your current lock is outdated, often a lock upgrade at the same time is a more cost effective and sensible solution.

Lock replacements are also common when moving into a new property. Even if the existing locks appear to be working fine, you cannot be sure how many keys are in circulation. Replacing them gives you full control and removes any uncertainty.

Should You Repair or Replace a Lock?

One of the most common questions is whether it is better to repair or replace a lock. The honest answer is that it depends on the condition of the lock and the cause of the problem.

If the issue is related to alignment, minor wear, or a specific component that can be repaired then a repair is usually the better option. It is quicker, more cost effective, and avoids the need to change keys. On the other hand, if the lock is failing repeatedly, has visible damage, or is outdated from a security point of view, replacement becomes the more reliable long term solution.

A proper assessment on site by a professional locksmith is the only way to know for certain. That is why every job starts with a clear in depth look at what is actually going on, rather than jumping straight into replacing parts.
